The Backup of Sewer, Drain, & Sump Pump endorsement is a coverage that can be added to your Homeowners Insurance policy, Landlord Policy, or a Commercial policy. With this endorsement added to your Homeowners insurance policy, you will now have coverage for events that would have otherwise been excluded. Let’s first look at the definition, to better understand the coverage this endorsement provides.
Definition: Provides coverage for water or sewage which backs up through sewers or drains, or which enters into and overflows from within a sump pump, sump pump well or any other system designed to remove subsurface water which is drained from the foundation area.
The Backup of Sewer, Drain, & Sump Pump endorsement typically applies if one of two events occur:
- The first event, and most common, is if water damage occurs due to your sump pump failing to operate. For example, if your sump pump fails to operate during a storm due to a power outage, which allows water to overflow from within the sump pump well, causing water damage in your basement. Your homeowners policy will only provide coverage if your policy includes the Backup of Sewer, Drain, & Sump Pump endorsement.
- This endorsement also provides coverage in the event that there is a discharge or overflow of sewer water into your household, and the discharge or overflow was caused by a blockage in the sewer line. You may think that the township would pay for the damage that was caused by a blockage within their pipes; however, the township does not provide coverage.
This endorsement does not provide coverage, in the event that the water or sewer lines under your property need to be repaired or are in need of maintenance. That would be covered under the endorsement “Service Line Coverage”.
